WHAT IS COMMON SENSES?

Common SENSES is a community-led action-research project to support environmental justice action in the neighborhoods along Blue Hill Avenue from the Dudley Town Common to Franklin Park. Together we have deployed and manage a network of heat, noise, and air quality sensors as community infrastructure and will use community stories and sensor data to imagine solutions.
The project is a collaboration between Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative; Project R.I.G.H.T. Inc; Boston Area Research Initiative and affiliated Northeastern University researchers; and the Office of Emerging Technology, City of Boston.

OUR GOALS

Collected and mapped community stories of environmental hazards.

Co-created and installed a sensor network to measure these hazards.

Co-design community, data-driven solutions to address these hazards.

Analyze data based on community priorities to inform policy and advocacy.
Anyone can access the sensor data to look at live and/or past data on heat, noise, and air quality. The data can be used to determine current conditions in your neighborhood, effects of urban projects, design solutions with your neighbors, and much more!

The Common SENSES team will:
• Publish data here.
• Support data analysis to supporet community priorities.
• Design and host community events towards the project goals.
HOW THE DATA WILL BE USED
OUR VALUES

No Surveillance
We do not collect any information on people or their behavior in public or private settings. Our sensors only collect environmental data (heat, noise, and air quality).
Environmental Justice
We are committed to enabling conversations between community members, local organizations, and public officials about environmental justice and actions along Blue Hill Avenue.
Data Justice
We ensure all environmental data collected are made available to everyone so that the community can use them to draw decision and co-design solutions.
