CO-DESIGNED WORKSHOPS
We developed workshops that invited community members to share their stories in order to:
-
Map their experiences with hazards in the Common Senses area; and
-
Identify locations for sensors leveraging shared community stories throughout the neighborhoods surrounding Blue Hill Avenue.
A lot of elderly residents in the area who are very sensitive to noise especially those with dementia and sensory issues.
I tried walking [...] in that location and the heat and air-quality was terrible and very uncomfortable.
Too much traffic.
ATTENDED COMMUNITY EVENTS
We brought our interactive maps and materials to existing community gatherings and events, such as civic association meetings, public libraries, Dudley Town Common farmers' market, festivals, and Roxbury Open Streets. This outreach ensured that more stories were captured that inspired sensor placements prioritized by the community.

They're throwing the trash in our area [...] we're the dumpster [...] noise could capture the noise of trucks..
It could be older folks in the home or children who have underlying illnesses.
It is way too hot and sometimes humid when I pass through.

MAPPED HAZARD STORIES
We organized the gathered community stories into maps to indicate the experiences and locations of hazards. An online interactive map is available to the public to explore the hazards and stories.
Low tree density, a lot of concrete, urban heat.
It [Dudley Town Common] doesn't have somewhere to sit at the shadow.
Traffic from Blue Hill Ave. and Dudley Street. Airplane noise waking neighbors and myself.
PLACED SENSORS
We placed 24 air quality sensors and 51 heat and noise sensors from Franklin Park to Dudley Town Common based directly on stories and locations identified by the community.

NEXT STEPS
-
Design and host workshops to analyze and make sense of the data collected.
-
Imagine and co-design solutions based on community knowledge and data.
-
Advocate and present to government officials.
-
Support the community's priorities.
